Jehoiada
Jehoiada, the son of Benaiah, succeeded Ahithophel as King David's counselor.
Jehoiada was the high priest who preserved the infant Joash from Athaliah's massacre and after six years organized the coup that restored the Davidic dynasty in Judah. He stored weapons in the temple and instructed the Levites and guard captains, crowned Joash at age seven, presented him with 'the testimony' (probably the Law), and executed Athaliah (2 Kings 11; 2 Chronicles 22–23). Under his influence, Joash repaired the temple and purged Baal worship from Judah. He lived to be one hundred thirty years old and was buried in the royal tombs—an honor unprecedented for a non-Davidic figure (2 Chronicles 24:15–16). Tragically, after his death, Joash reverted to apostasy and ordered Jehoiada's own son Zechariah stoned—a bloodguilt Jesus cited (Matthew 23:35).
