Old Testament

Lo-ammi, meaning "not my people," was the symbolic name given to Hosea's son, representing God's rejection of Israel.

Lo-ammi ('Not My People') was the symbolic name given by God to the third child of the prophet Hosea and Gomer, signifying divine rejection of Israel for its covenant unfaithfulness (Hosea 1:9). The name reverses the foundational covenant formula 'I will be your God and you will be my people,' marking the most severe possible rupture of the divine-human relationship. Yet Hosea 2:23 promises eschatological restoration: 'I will say to Lo-ammi, You are my people.' Paul cites this reversal in Romans 9:25–26 as a prophecy of the Gentiles' inclusion in the people of God.
