Old Testament

Lo-ruhamah, meaning "not pitied," was the symbolic name given to Hosea's daughter, representing God's withdrawal of mercy from Israel.

Lo-ruhamah ('No Mercy' or 'Not Pitied') was the symbolic name given to Hosea's daughter, signifying God's withdrawal of compassion from the northern kingdom of Israel (Hosea 1:6). The LORD's announcement—'I will no longer have mercy on Israel'—stands in contrast to his continued compassion for Judah. Like her brother Lo-ammi, her name is reversed in the promise of restoration: 'I will show my love to the one I called 'Not my loved one'' (Hosea 2:23). The Apostle Peter applies this imagery to the newly constituted people of God in 1 Peter 2:10.
