Nabal, a wealthy man from Carmel, was known for his foolishness and mistreatment of David, which nearly led to his demise.
Nabal was a wealthy Calebite from Maon who owned three thousand sheep and a thousand goats at Carmel in the hill country of Judah (1 Samuel 25:2–3). When David sent messengers requesting provisions in return for the protection his men had provided to Nabal's shepherds, Nabal responded with contemptuous insults—a response consistent with his character described as 'harsh and badly behaved.' His wife Abigail intervened with gifts to avert David's wrath, and Nabal died of a stroke ten days later, an event the narrative interprets as divine judgment (1 Samuel 25:37–38). David then took Abigail as his wife.
