Old Testament

Nahash, the king of the Ammonites, besieged Jabesh Gilead and threatened to gouge out the right eyes of its inhabitants.

Nahash king of the Ammonites besieged Jabesh-gilead and offered to spare the city only on condition that every man's right eye be gouged out—an act of calculated humiliation (1 Samuel 11:1–2). His threat provoked Saul's first military action as king, and the subsequent relief of Jabesh-gilead confirmed Saul's leadership over all Israel (1 Samuel 11:6–11). A later Nahash king of Ammon showed kindness to David, and after his death David sent condolences to his son Hanun—an embassy that was rebuffed and sparked a major war (2 Samuel 10:1–4).
