Study Note

The promise to the overcomer in Sardis has three components: white garments (purity and resurrection life), a name not blotted from the book of life, and Christ's personal acknowledgment before the Father and his angels. White clothing in Revelation consistently denotes the righteousness of the saints and their participation in eschatological victory (3:4; 6:11; 7:9). The 'book of life' (biblion tes zoes) echoes Exodus 32:32-33 and Psalm 69:28, where names being 'blotted out' denotes covenant exclusion. Jesus' promise to 'confess their name before my Father' directly inverts his warning in Matthew 10:32-33, where denying him leads to his denying them before the Father.
