Study Note

The Mosaic summary 'what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul' provides the covenant's ethical distillation in five interrelated demands. The verse has been called the Deuteronomic counterpart to Micah 6:8's 'what does the Lord require' and Jesus's 'great commandment' (Matthew 22:37-40) — all three represent the prophetic-legal tradition's attempt to identify the covenant's essential demand. The combination of cognitive reverence (fear), behavioral conformity (walking in his ways), affective commitment (love), and total-person service comprehends the entire person — will, conduct, emotion, and energy — in covenantal relationship with God. The Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-5) provides the theological basis, and 10:12 is its ethical elaboration.
