God's promise to David — 'I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom' — is the foundational Davidic covenant text that generates all subsequent messianic expectation in the Hebrew Bible. The immediate referent is Solomon, whose temple-building fulfils the next verse's promise; but the eternal dimensions of the covenant (verse 13: 'I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever') exceed Solomon's historical reign and point beyond it. The formula 'I will be his father, and he shall be my son' (verse 14) becomes a messianic title-text cited in Hebrews 1:5 and applied to the risen Jesus ('thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee'). Acts 2:30-31 reads Psalm 132:11 ('of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne') as fulfilled in the resurrection, making the Davidic covenant's fulfilment eschatological rather than merely Solomonic.
