Acts 20:24

Study Note

'But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.' This statement of self-abandonment — spoken in Miletus as Paul heads toward certain suffering in Jerusalem — is among the New Testament's most eloquent expressions of vocational surrender. The athletic metaphor ('finish my course') appears also in Philippians 3:14 and 2 Timothy 4:7, and the phrase 'the gospel of the grace of God' compresses Paul's entire theological program into five words.
