Study Note

The reversal oracle — 'the sons of those who afflicted you shall come bending low to you, and all who despised you shall bow down at your feet' — belongs to the collection of eschatological restoration promises in Isaiah 60-62. The naming of the city as 'the city of the LORD, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel' grounds the geopolitical reversal in theological identity: it is the LORD's presence that draws the nations. The passage inverts the Babylonian humiliation narratives (compare Lamentations 1-2) and anticipates the universal tributary procession also found in Psalm 72:10-11 and Isaiah 45:14. The verse has been read eschatologically in both Jewish and Christian traditions as anticipating the final vindication of the people of God before the nations.
