Job 23:12

Job's declaration 'neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food' stands in vivid irony — the man who throughout the dialogue protests God's injustice simultaneously maintains that he has valued God's word above sustenance itself. The juxtaposition of Job's intellectual argument with God and his personal devotion to God's word demonstrates that the dialogue of lament is compatible with deep covenantal commitment — the two are not mutually exclusive. The same image of the word as food appears in Deuteronomy 8:3 ('man doth not live by bread only, but by every word…') and Matthew 4:4 (Jesus' wilderness temptation response) — creating a canonical motif of divine speech as life-sustaining nourishment. Psalm 19:10 ('more to be desired are they than gold…sweeter also than honey') and Psalm 119:103 ('sweeter than honey to my mouth') develop the same word-as-food theology in explicitly devotional register.
