Study Note

'And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words' — Luke's scene-setting for the tribute-to-Caesar question exposes the studied dishonesty of Jesus's opponents: they performed justice and sought it simultaneously, deploying a mask of sincere inquiry to achieve a judicial trap. The Greek hypokrinomai ('feign') is the same root as 'hypocrisy,' making their performance an inadvertent illustration of the very Pharisaic leaven Jesus had warned against in 12:1. Jesus's answer — 'Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's' (verse 25) — has become the founding text for Christian two-kingdoms and church-state reflection across two millennia.
