Study Note

'The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the Lord, and say, Is not the Lord among us? none evil can come upon us.' Micah's diagnosis of corrupt leadership is especially devastating because it combines venality with religious presumption: they sell their ministry, yet claim divine protection. The false confidence — 'Is not the Lord among us?' — turns the covenant promise of divine presence (Exodus 33:14-16) into a blank check immunizing leadership against moral accountability. Jeremiah 7:4 ('The temple of the Lord!') and Matthew 23:25-28 ('whited sepulchres') target the same phenomenon of religious form covering moral corruption.
