Achsah

Exodus & Wilderness Tribe of Judah · H5915H
Old Testament

Achsah is mentioned as the daughter of Caleb, the son of Hur, in the genealogy of the tribe of Judah.

Achsah was a daughter of Caleb of the tribe of Judah, mentioned in the genealogical list of 1 Chronicles 2:49, and more famously in Joshua 15:16–19 and Judges 1:12–15 as the prize offered to whoever conquered Debir. Othniel, who became the first judge of Israel, won her hand. After her marriage she boldly petitioned her father for a field, and when given upper and lower springs in the Negev she demonstrated shrewd resourcefulness. Achsah's story is notable for depicting a woman who actively secured her own inheritance, foreshadowing the initiative of women like Ruth and the daughters of Zelophehad.
