Chilion

Tribe of Judah · H3630
Old Testament

Chilion was the son of Elimelech and Naomi, and the husband of Orpah.

Chilion was a son of Elimelech and Naomi from Bethlehem, who accompanied his family to Moab during a famine in Judah (Ruth 1:2). He married a Moabite woman named Orpah, but died in Moab along with his father Elimelech and his brother Mahlon before the family could return to Judah (Ruth 1:5). Chilion's death, along with Mahlon's, left Naomi bereft of her sons and husband in a foreign land—the crisis that set in motion the story of Ruth's devotion and Boaz's redemption.
