Cozbi

Exodus & Wilderness > · H3579
Old Testament

Cozbi, a Midianite woman, was killed along with an Israelite man for their immorality.

Cozbi was a Midianite woman, the daughter of Zur, a chief of a Midianite clan (Numbers 25:15–18). During Israel's apostasy at Peor, an Israelite man named Zimri brought Cozbi openly into the camp while Moses and the elders wept at the tent of meeting. Phinehas son of Eleazar killed them both with a spear, ending the divine plague that had killed twenty-four thousand Israelites. God commended Phinehas's zeal and established with him a covenant of perpetual priesthood. Cozbi's death illustrates the severity with which the narrative treats the seduction of Israel into Baal worship.
