Hadadezer

United Kingdom Syria · H1909
Old Testament

Hadadezer, king of Zobah, was defeated by King David in battle, and his allies, the Arameans, became subject to Israel.

Hadadezer son of Rehob was king of Zobah, the most powerful Aramean state of the early monarchic period, who was twice defeated by David in major military campaigns recorded in 2 Samuel 8:3–12 and 10:6–19. David captured 1,700 of his horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers in the first encounter and confiscated the gold shields of his officers. Hadadezer's repeated defeats ended Aramean dominance in Syria-Palestine and enabled David to extend Israelite control from the Euphrates to the border of Egypt.
