Horonitas

Old Testament

The Horonites were a people group who opposed Nehemiah's efforts to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

The Horonites are known primarily through Sanballat the Horonite, who is mentioned alongside Tobiah the Ammonite as an adversary of Nehemiah's project to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2:10, 19; 4:1–3; 6:1–14). Sanballat mocked the builders, conspired against the work, and attempted to intimidate Nehemiah personally. The designation 'Horonite' likely refers to Beth-horon or another town named Horonaim in Moab. Their opposition represents the political hostility that the restoration community of Judah faced from neighboring peoples during the Persian period.
