Old Testament

Huldah was a prophetess who was consulted by King Josiah's officials regarding the authenticity of the Book of the Law discovered during temple repairs.

Huldah was a prophetess in Jerusalem during the reign of King Josiah whose oracle in response to the discovered Book of the Law (probably Deuteronomy) authorized and shaped Josiah's great reform (2 Kings 22:14–20; 2 Chronicles 34:22–28). When Hilkiah found the scroll in the temple, Josiah sent a delegation including Hilkiah and Shaphan the scribe to inquire of the LORD through Huldah. She confirmed the scroll's authority and declared that the threatened judgments would indeed come upon Judah—but that Josiah himself, because he had humbled himself before God, would die in peace before seeing the disaster. Notably, she was consulted rather than the prophet Jeremiah, who was active at the same time. Her role underscores the recognized authority of female prophets in ancient Israel.
