Shallum

Divided Kingdom Tribe of Judah · H7967I
Old Testament

Shallum, the son of Sismai, was a descendant of Judah through the line of Jerahmeel.

Shallum was the fifteenth king of the northern kingdom of Israel, who assassinated Zechariah son of Jeroboam II and seized the throne around 752 BC. His reign lasted only one month—the second shortest after Zimri's seven days—before he was in turn assassinated by Menahem son of Gadi (2 Kings 15:13–15). The prophets Hosea and Amos, contemporaries of this tumultuous period, interpreted the succession of coups as evidence of God's judgment on the northern kingdom for its persistent idolatry and social injustice. Shallum is notable as one of the few kings mentioned in the Assyrian annals, though his reign was too brief to leave any significant historical impact beyond demonstrating the political collapse of the northern kingdom.
