Old Testament

Solomon, also called Jedidiah, was the son of David and Bathsheba who succeeded his father as king of Israel and was renowned for his wisdom, wealth, and the construction of the First Temple in Jerusalem.

Solomon was the son of David and Bathsheba who reigned over the united Israelite kingdom at its greatest extent, known for his divinely granted wisdom, his building of the Jerusalem temple, and his accumulation of unprecedented wealth and international prestige (1 Kings 1–11; 2 Chronicles 1–9). His early prayer for wisdom (1 Kings 3:5–14), his judgment in the case of the two mothers (1 Kings 3:16–28), and his judicial and administrative organization made him the paradigm of wise kingship in the ancient world. His later marriages to foreign women who turned his heart after their gods (1 Kings 11) represent the tragic undoing of his legacy, and the resulting divine division of the kingdom is attributed to his apostasy.
