The eight blessings pronounced by Jesus at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3-12). Each begins with 'Blessed' (makarios) and overturns worldly values: the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and those persecuted for righteousness. Luke 6:20-26 records four beatitudes with corresponding 'woes.' The Beatitudes describe not entry requirements for the kingdom but the character of those who live under God's reign. They portray a counter-cultural community shaped by grace, humility, compassion, and willingness to suffer for justice.
