Study Note

'As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty: but they made it the images of their abominations and of their detestable things therein: therefore have I set it far from them' — the 'ornament' (tsevi — beauty, glory) refers to the temple gold and silver that God gave as an expression of his covenant glory but which Israel converted into idolatrous images. The reversal structure — divine gift transformed into the instrument of apostasy — anticipates Ezekiel's later restoration promise where the divine glory that departed (Ezekiel 10–11) will return to the restored temple (Ezekiel 43:2–5). The passage illustrates the theological danger of treating divine gifts as intrinsic possessions rather than trust-held stewardships.
