Study Note

'Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils' — Paul applies the Jewish concept of table-fellowship as covenant-defining participation to the incompatibility of Eucharistic sharing in Christ with ritual sharing in pagan sacrificial meals. The 'cannot' (ou dynasthe) is not physical impossibility but moral-ontological contradiction: the two forms of participation belong to mutually exclusive loyalties and realities. The verse is foundational in eucharistic theology for the idea that the Lord's Supper creates and expresses an exclusive covenant bond, and in missiology for understanding how cultural-religious practices may entangle believers in spiritual allegiances beyond surface participation.
