Study Note

'They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might' — the description of final judgment as exclusion from divine presence has generated significant theological debate about the nature of hell. The phrase 'eternal destruction' (olethron aiōnion) does not necessarily imply annihilation — 'aionion' modifies the quality or eternal character of the destruction, while 'olethros' can mean ruin or loss rather than cessation of existence. The definition 'away from the presence of the Lord' (apo prosōpou tou kyriou) draws on the LXX of Isaiah 2:10, 19, where the wicked flee from the presence of the LORD in the day of judgment. Theologians have used this verse to support annihilationism, traditionalist conscious punishment, and the relational definition of hell as permanent separation from God.
