Study Note

'Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.' The verse weaves together three christological claims — ontological (image and glory of God), cosmological (sustainer of all things), and soteriological (purger of sins) — before locating Christ in the position of ultimate honor: seated at the right hand. The Greek 'charakter' (express image) implies the precise impression of a seal or coin die — not resemblance but exact representation. John 1:14, Colossians 1:15, and 2 Corinthians 4:4 all develop related imagery, together constituting the New Testament's sustained case for Christ's full participation in the divine nature.
