Study Note

'But if you will not listen, my soul will weep in secret for your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly and run down with tears, because the LORD's flock has been taken captive' — Jeremiah's weeping for Judah's impending exile is one of the most direct expressions of prophetic solidarity with judgment in the Hebrew Bible. The phrase 'weep in secret' (bemistarim) suggests that Jeremiah's grief is not performed for effect but is a genuine private anguish — the prophet who announces judgment is not detached from its consequence. The divine pathos underlying the prophetic sorrow parallels the divine lament of Hosea 11:8 and Jeremiah 9:1, suggesting that the 'I' who weeps is simultaneously the prophet and YHWH grieving through the prophet. The verse has been important for Heschel's theology of divine pathos and for any model of prophetic ministry that insists on emotional investment in the community addressed rather than detached proclamation.
