Note d'étude

Study Note

Jesus's declaration 'and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die' extends the resurrection promise of verse 25 beyond physical death: the believer who already lives (physically) and believes enters a qualitative mode of existence that death cannot interrupt. The 'never' (eis ton aiōna) is absolute — not 'will not die until the resurrection' but a permanent present-tense reality of spiritual life that physical death cannot terminate. John 5:24 ('he that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life') provides the nearest parallel, framing eternal life as a present possession. The question 'Believest thou this?' addressed to Martha (and through her to every reader) makes the verse's truth claim a personal challenge rather than merely theological proposition.
