Study Note

Zechariah's Benedictus describes the Messiah as coming 'to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.' The imagery conflates Isaiah 9:2 ('a great light'), Isaiah 42:7 ('to open blind eyes'), and Numbers 6:26's Aaronic blessing of peace, presenting John the Baptist's ministry as the dawn-herald of this messianic illumination. The 'shadow of death' (skiā thanatou) translates the Hebrew 'tsalmawet' of Psalm 107:10 and 14, where prisoners in darkness and chains are delivered by the Lord — a corporate image that Zechariah now applies to the whole people awaiting liberation. Luke 2:32 takes up the same light-to-the-Gentiles theme in Simeon's Nunc Dimittis, confirming that illumination of the nations is central to Luke's programmatic christology.
