The Pharisees, identified as 'lovers of money,' derided Jesus after his teaching on the impossibility of serving both God and wealth (Luke 16:13). The Greek 'exemykterizon' (to sneer at, literally to turn up one's nose) conveys contemptuous dismissal rather than engaged debate. Jesus' response (16:15) cuts to the heart: 'What is highly valued among men is detestable in God's sight,' exposing the gap between social respectability and divine judgment. The juxtaposition of the Pharisees' covetousness with the parable of the rich man and Lazarus that immediately follows makes this verse a narrative hinge in Luke 16.
