Achish

Old Testament

Achish, also referred to as Abimelech, was the Philistine king of Gath who granted refuge to David when he fled from King Saul, but later dismissed him due to the suspicion of his servants.

Achish, also referred to as Abimelech in the superscription of Psalm 34, was the Philistine king of Gath who twice encountered David—first when David feigned madness to escape (1 Samuel 21:10–15), and later when David and his men took refuge with him for sixteen months while fleeing Saul (1 Samuel 27–29). During the second stay, Achish trusted David enough to appoint him as his personal bodyguard, but the Philistine lords insisted on David's removal before the battle of Jezreel, fearing his loyalty. Achish's dealings with David provide insight into Philistine political culture and the complex survival strategies of David's outlaw years.
