Aram

Divided Kingdom Tribe of Asher · H0758J
Old Testament

Aram was a descendant of Asher, mentioned in the genealogy of the tribe of Asher.

Aram was a son of Shemer (Shomer) and a descendant of Asher, listed in the genealogy of 1 Chronicles 7:34. He appears among the sons of Asher's descendant Helem, who are identified as mighty warriors and heads of ancestral houses. Several men named Aram appear in the Old Testament, including a son of Shem who gave his name to the Aramean people (Genesis 10:22–23) and an ancestor of Jesus in Matthew 1:3–4. The name Aram carries strong ethnic and geographic resonance as the designation of the Semitic peoples of Syria and Mesopotamia, Israel's northern neighbors and frequent adversaries.
