Asa

Exile Tribe of Levi · H0609H
Old Testament

Asa was a Levite gatekeeper who resettled in Jerusalem (1Ch.9.16).

Asa was the third king of Judah, reigning approximately 911–870 BC, and was commended as one who 'did what was right in the eyes of the LORD' (1 Kings 15:11). He expelled male cult prostitutes, removed idols installed by his predecessors, and deposed his own grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother because she had made an Asherah image (1 Kings 15:12–13). He relied on God during a major invasion by the Ethiopian king Zerah and won a remarkable victory (2 Chronicles 14:9–15). In his later years, however, he made a political alliance with Aram-Damascus rather than trusting God against Israel, and when rebuked by the seer Hanani, imprisoned him—a failure of faith that clouded an otherwise commendable reign (2 Chronicles 16:1–10).
