Asharelah

Divided Kingdom Tribe of Levi · H0841
Old Testament

Asharelah (or Jesharelah) was a Levite musician appointed by David to prophesy with lyres (1Ch.25.2, 14).

Asharelah (also spelled Jesharelah or Asarelah) was a son of Asaph, appointed by David and the temple commanders to prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals as part of the organized Levitical music ministry at the sanctuary (1 Chronicles 25:2, 14). He led the seventh division of the twenty-four courses of musicians established by David. The sons of Asaph were particularly prominent in temple music, and their father is credited with several psalms in the Psalter (Psalms 50, 73–83). Asharelah represents the institutional organization of sacred music under David's reorganization of Israel's worship.
