Doeg the Edomite, Saul's chief shepherd, witnessed David receiving help from Ahimelech and later betrayed him to Saul, resulting in the massacre of the priests at Nob.

Doeg the Edomite was the chief of Saul's herdsmen who witnessed David receiving bread and the sword of Goliath from Ahimelech the priest at Nob (1 Samuel 21:7). He later reported this encounter to Saul, who commanded the killing of the priests of Nob. When Saul's own servants refused, Doeg carried out the massacre, killing eighty-five priests along with all the inhabitants of the city of Nob (1 Samuel 22:9–23). His treachery against the priesthood is commemorated in Psalm 52, where David laments 'the mighty man who boasts of evil.'
