Habaiah was a priest whose descendants were excluded from the priesthood due to insufficient genealogical records.
Habaiah was the ancestor of a priestly family that returned from Babylonian exile but was excluded from the priesthood because they could not prove their genealogy (Ezra 2:61; Nehemiah 7:63). They were told to abstain from priestly duties until a priest with the Urim and Thummim could determine their status. Their situation illustrates the importance placed on genealogical verification in the post-exilic restoration of the priesthood and the difficulty of maintaining complete records through the disruption of the Babylonian captivity.
