Hivites

Early Patriarch · H2340
Old Testament

The Hivites were one of the Canaanite tribes inhabiting the land promised to the Israelites.

The Hivites were one of the pre-Israelite Canaanite peoples enumerated in the Table of Nations as descendants of Canaan (Genesis 10:17). They appear throughout the Old Testament as inhabitants of the hill country and of Gibeon; the Gibeonites who deceived Joshua into a peace treaty were Hivites (Joshua 9:7; 11:19). God commanded Israel to drive out the Hivites along with the other Canaanite nations from the Promised Land (Exodus 3:8, 17). Their eventual absorption into Israelite society is reflected in Solomon's use of Hivite remnants for forced labor (1 Kings 9:20).
