Old Testament

Jabesh, the son of Shallum, conspired against and assassinated Zechariah, becoming king of Israel, but reigned for only one month before being killed by Menahem.

Jabesh was the father of Shallum, who assassinated King Zechariah of Israel in public and reigned in his place (2 Kings 15:10). Shallum's reign lasted only one month before he was himself assassinated by Menahem son of Gadi (2 Kings 15:13–14), fulfilling the prophetic word that Jehu's dynasty would end with Zechariah (2 Kings 10:30). Jabesh is known entirely through his son's violent seizure of the Israelite throne, an event that inaugurated a period of rapid and bloody political instability in the northern kingdom.
