New Testament

Martha, the sister of Mary and Lazarus, hosted Jesus in her home.

Martha was the sister of Mary and Lazarus of Bethany, a close friend of Jesus who hosted him in her home (Luke 10:38–42; John 11–12). Her famous exchange with Jesus about Mary's contemplative choice versus her own practical service established her character as one of active hospitality and service. In John 11, when Lazarus died, Martha's faith dialogue with Jesus—'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God'—is one of the most profound confessions of faith in the Gospel, anticipating Peter's own confession. She is one of the most fully drawn women characters in the New Testament.
