Methushael

Early Patriarch · H4967
Old Testament

Methushael, a descendant of Cain, was the father of Lamech.

Methushael was a descendant of Cain through the line of Enoch son of Cain, Irad, and Mehujael, and is the father of the notorious Lamech—the first polygamist recorded in Scripture and the man who boasted of seventy-sevenfold vengeance (Genesis 4:18). He belongs to the Cainite genealogy in Genesis 4, which is structurally parallel to the Sethite genealogy in Genesis 5 and reflects the biblical narrator's interest in tracing human civilization and its moral trajectory. Methushael appears only in this genealogical passage.
