Naamah

United Kingdom Ammon · H5279A
Old Testament

Naamah, an Ammonite woman, was the mother of Rehoboam, who succeeded his father Solomon as king of Judah.

Naamah was an Ammonite woman, one of the many foreign wives of King Solomon, and the mother of Rehoboam, who succeeded his father on the throne of Judah (1 Kings 14:21, 31; 2 Chronicles 12:13). Her Ammonite identity is emphasized in both regnal formulae, reflecting the Deuteronomistic concern that Solomon's foreign marriages led Israel into idolatry. As queen mother to Rehoboam, she would have held an honored position at the Judahite court, and her foreign origin placed her in the same category as the wives whose influence the prophets condemned.
