Nathan

Divided Kingdom Tribe of Judah · H5416J
Old Testament

Nathan, the son of Attai, is mentioned in the genealogy of the tribe of Judah.

Nathan was the court prophet during the reigns of David and the early years of Solomon, playing key roles in several pivotal events. He delivered the Davidic Covenant, God's promise of an enduring dynasty, to David (2 Samuel 7:1–17). Most memorably, he confronted David after the Bathsheba affair with the parable of the rich man who stole a poor man's ewe lamb, eliciting David's self-condemnation (2 Samuel 12:1–15). He also supported Bathsheba's efforts to secure the throne for Solomon over Adonijah (1 Kings 1:11–45) and participated in Solomon's anointing. The Books of Chronicles attribute historical records to him (1 Chronicles 29:29; 2 Chronicles 9:29), and his willingness to speak truth to the most powerful man in Israel makes him a model of prophetic courage.
