Noah was a righteous man who built the ark and survived the great flood with his family.
Noah was a righteous man chosen by God to build an ark and preserve life through the catastrophic flood described in Genesis 6–9. Living in a generation marked by widespread wickedness, he alone 'walked with God,' and God instructed him to construct a vessel for his family and representatives of every animal species. After the floodwaters receded, God established a covenant with Noah symbolized by a rainbow, promising never again to destroy all life by flood. Noah subsequently became a farmer, planted a vineyard, and fathered three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—who are portrayed as ancestors of the major peoples of the known world (Genesis 10).
