Ophir

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Early Patriarch · H0211G
Old Testament

Ophir was a son of Joktan, a descendant of Shem, mentioned in the Table of Nations.

Ophir was a son of Joktan and descendant of Shem, listed among the peoples of southern Arabia in the Table of Nations (Genesis 10:29; 1 Chronicles 1:23). He gives his name to the legendary region of Ophir celebrated for its exceptional gold—Solomon's fleet made regular voyages to Ophir and brought back 420 talents of gold (1 Kings 9:28; 10:11; 2 Chronicles 8:18). The location of Ophir has been identified with various places including southern Arabia, the east African coast, and even India, but no scholarly consensus has been reached.
