Study Note

Paul's receipt acknowledgment of the Philippian gift — 'I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God' — applies Levitical sacrificial language to the financial gift of a Gentile community. The terms 'fragrant offering' (osmē euōdias) and 'sacrifice acceptable and well-pleasing to God' directly quote Exodus 29:18 and Leviticus 1:9, 13, 17, where the phrase describes burnt offerings. The theological implication is that material generosity offered to sustain gospel work has the same standing before God as the Levitical sacrificial system it fulfills. Romans 12:1 and Hebrews 13:15-16 similarly apply sacrificial language to non-cultic acts, indicating a consistent New Testament pattern of spiritualizing and democratizing temple worship.
