Paul's declaration that 'the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit' reorients the Corinthian and Roman disputes over food laws away from boundary maintenance toward the substantive realities of the kingdom. The triad 'righteousness, peace, and joy' — all qualified 'in the Holy Spirit' — defines kingdom life as the Spirit's transformative work rather than external religious markers. The verse does not abolish food laws but relativizes them relative to the greater goods; Paul will immediately add that one must not eat in a way that destroys a fellow believer (verse 20), holding freedom and love in balance. The passage has been central to discussions of Christian liberty, distinguishing adiaphora (things indifferent) from genuine marks of the kingdom.
