Study Note
The heavenly court scene in which Joshua the high priest stands before the angel of the Lord 'and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him' provides one of the Old Testament's most vivid depictions of the adversarial figure in the divine council. The name 'Satan' (hassatan, 'the accuser') functions as a title — the prosecuting attorney of the heavenly court — not yet the fully developed personal name of later Christian theology. The vision is dated to the post-exilic period (Joshua is the historical high priest of Ezra's time), making the exchange about covenantal fitness for ministry in a community that has recently returned from the 'fire' of exile. The divine rebuke 'the Lord rebuke thee, O Satan' (3:2) was adopted by Jude 9 into the vocabulary of apostolic polemic against demonic opposition.
