Zephaniah 1:18

Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

Study Note

The warning that 'neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord's wrath' applies the day-of-the-Lord tradition's characteristic reversal to economic security: the very instruments of earthly confidence become useless at the moment of eschatological reckoning. Zephaniah 1:14-18 is arguably the most concentrated day-of-the-Lord passage in the prophets, describing it as bitter, speedy, distress, ruin, desolation, darkness, and thick darkness in rapid succession. The phrase 'the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy' develops Deuteronomy 6:15's 'jealous God' theology into eschatological imagery, connecting covenant jealousy (anger at infidelity) with final judgment. Revelation 6:15-17 echoes this passage: kings and mighty men hide in rocks, crying for the mountains to cover them from 'the great day of his wrath' — confirming Zephaniah's day-of-the-Lord vision as the canonical background of Revelation's judgment scenes.
