Study Note

Study Note

Paul identifies the telos of the Abrahamic promise as the extension of blessing to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that 'we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.' The equation of the Abrahamic blessing with the Spirit-gift is Paul's most concentrated formulation of how the Old Testament promise arrives in the New Testament community: not territorial expansion but pneumatological reception. The verse also resolves the apparent tension between Genesis 12:3 (blessing to all families) and the curse of the law (3:13) — Christ becoming a curse redeems from the curse and unlocks the blessing. Acts 2:38's 'repent and be baptized… and you will receive the gift of the Spirit' presents the same convergence of Abrahamic promise and Spirit-reception in the apostolic proclamation.
