Study Note

Paul's declaration 'God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world' concludes the polemical argument of Galatians by repositioning the grounds of boasting from circumcision (6:13) to the crucifixion. The mutual crucifixion — Paul to the world and the world to Paul — extends the participatory language of Galatians 2:20 ('I am crucified with Christ') to include the entire social matrix of status-seeking by which the Galatian agitators maintained their standing. Martin Luther found this verse one of the most personally liberating in all Paul, and his commentary on Galatians remains the classic Protestant exposition of the theology of the cross over against any theology of glory. The verse has also shaped Christian ascetic and mystical tradition's language of detachment from worldly honor.
